When it comes to fire-rated curtain wall systems, the sealing material you choose can determine whether a building passes code inspection or faces costly remediation. Firestop silicone sealant serves as the primary barrier against the spread of flame, smoke, and water through construction joints and penetrations in exterior façade assemblies. Unlike standard weatherproofing caulks, these specialized elastomeric compounds maintain adhesion and integrity under sustained thermal exposure, making them the material of choice for architects, fire protection engineers, and procurement specialists working on high-rise and commercial construction projects across the United States.
When curtain wall assemblies are put together, they create a continuous vertical cavity that can act as a chimney during a fire and speed up the movement of flames from floor to floor. This is taken care of by a fire-blocking sealant that turns into a non-flammable char when exposed to heat. This stops both flame passing (F-Rating) and too much temperature rise on the side that hasn't been exposed (T-Rating). For joint systems, testing standards like ASTM E1966 and UL 2079 are used. For through-penetration firestop systems, ASTM E814 (UL 1479) is used. Products that are rated by these frameworks have been shown to protect for one to four hours.
The silicone elastomer backbone naturally resists UV light, doesn't absorb water, and keeps its shape over a wide range of uses. Jiaobao's one-part RTV firestop silicone sealant keeps working from -50°C to +150°C (-58°F to +302°F), so it can handle temperature changes in outdoor wall settings. Because it is 99.5% non-volatile, almost no material is lost during curing. This means that the sealed joint will keep its shape over the life of the product.
A effective firestop seal starts with preparing the surface. Before applying, the surface must be clean, dry, and free of any oils or loose particles. Once everything is ready, the sealant is pressed into the joint space, usually over a mineral wool or ceramic fiber backing, and shaped to make sure it touches both sides of the base. This method is needed for head-of-wall joints in curtain wall building, where the space between the edge of the floor slab and the glazing system on the outside needs to be able to handle wind drift and movement between stories.

All of these activation situations have one thing in common: the seal must stay flexible even if the building moves, it must be able to withstand moisture in the air, and it must work in a fire without coming off. Because of these qualities, silicone-based chemistry is most often used for firestop silicone sealant outside and in high-movement areas.
To choose the right firestop chemistry, you need to know what the pros and cons of each type of material are. Each technology works best in a certain set of situations, and using the wrong one can lead to failed checks or seals wearing out too quickly.
Up to 10 times their original size, intumescent sealants get very big when they get hot. This makes them good for sealing around plastic pipes that melt in a fire and fill the empty space that the sealant creates. However, intumescent materials are usually water-based, which means they can't be used in external areas that will be wet from rain, condensation, or freezing and thawing. This is a problem with both acrylic and latex firestop products. They work best in internal areas with little movement and where you want to paint over the sealant line.
Polyurethane firestop sealants stick well and are somewhat flexible, but they break down when exposed to UV light for a long time, so they can't be used on exposed curtain wall joints. If you compare this to silicone-based fire safety seals, they work the same way inside and outside. Their Shore A hardness of 20 to 35 gives them the flexibility needed for joints that move a lot without cracking or delaminating over time.
The practical advice here is simple: use silicone formulations for exterior joints, high-movement assemblies, and penetrations that are exposed to moisture; save intumescent products for plastic pipe penetrations; and only use acrylic systems in protected interior areas where the joints move very little.
The certification package that comes with a firestop product is just as important to procurement teams as the product itself. For a business project in the U.S., the full application should have UL or Intertek classification listings, the system number that refers to the assembly design, a current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) in the language of the project. Standards for piercing systems are listed according to ASTM E814/UL 1479, and standards for joint systems are listed according to ASTM E1966/UL 2079.
This one-part RTV firestop silicone sealant is made by Shandong Jiaobao New Material Co., Ltd., a company that was founded in 2013 and has ISO and CE certifications. It meets both domestic and international OEM export requirements. The product comes in 300 ml cartridges and 600 ml sausage packs in white, black, gray, or custom colors. If kept below 27°C in its original, unused package, it has a shelf life of 12 months. Installers need to make sure they have chemical-resistant gloves on and that there is enough air flow while the adhesive is being applied because the acidic cure mechanism gives off acetic acid vapor during the 45–60 minute "tack-free" phase. Active air exchange is needed to keep vapor concentrations below the limits for workers in tight shafts or machinery rooms.
As part of quality control after installation, the fully cured bead should be inspected visually, usually within 24 hours for a 3 mm cure depth, to make sure it is in continuous contact with both substrate faces, there are no gaps, and the joint depth-to-width ratio is correct. Maintenance plans for curtain wall joints should include checking them every three to five years and reapplying the sealant if there are obvious cracks, loss of stickiness, or changes in the joint's shape caused by building movement. The product's 0 mm sag rating proves that it stays in place in vertical joints without sagging before it cures, which directly cuts down on the amount of work that needs to be redone in the field.
Curtain wall systems that are fire-rated rely on the stability of every joint and penetration seal in the structure as a whole. The main compliance risk is taken out of the purchase choice by choosing a silicone-based firestop silicone sealant that has been tested and shown to be Class 1 W water resistant, have a wide service temperature range, and have ASTM/UL performance data. The specifications listed here show that the product was made to work in real buildings, not just in the lab. This gives project teams confidence from the planning stage to the final inspection.
Paints that are based on water or solvents don't stick to silicone. If you need to match the color, order the sealer from the maker in a custom color instead of painting over a bead that has already hardened.
Firestop silicone sealants harden into a char when exposed to fire and keep working in external areas that are wet, UV-exposed, or have a lot of movement. When heated, intumescent sealants get bigger, and they work best for plastic pipe penetrations in interior assemblies.
Be very careful. This mixture is made for metallic penetrants and structure parts. Intumescent caps or wraps are usually the right way to go for PVC or CPVC pipe penetrations. Always check against the relevant UL system detail.
Once sealed, unused package kept below 27°C (80°F) has a 12-month shelf life. High temperatures or humidity can cause in-cartridge drying to start before it's ready.
Under normal conditions (25°C, 50% RH), the surface dries in 45 to 60 minutes. It takes about 24 hours for the full cure to reach a depth of 3 mm. After that, the Class 1 W water resistance rating starts to work.
